Allo. As usual, there has been a significant time lapse since my last entry. Quite a few things have happened since my last entry and I will probably not post them.
Entertainment Related List since last list posted, comprising everything I remembered to write down since August of 2006 until now. There is a good amount of stuff, but I was sick and getting worse, and now that I am recently (finally) on medication, I am able to leave the house more often and do things. ( 11 Month List )

Allo, I wonder if anyone else has ever had a crush on Martha Plimpton. I don't quite understand why I even did, but I did and it lasted for only one of her movies. I despised her in The Goonies, and was annoyed by her in Beautiful Girls, but had a huge crush for her in Running On Empty (I also had a huge crush on her co-star River Phoeinx). I could not figure out the crush. I had dreams with her as her character from that movie for a few weeks even. It was a very short lived crush, but it was there none the less. I don't recall how old I was then, but I was still fairly young I am sure.
I think that this crush at an early age more or less shaped my tastes in women. I tend to like the tomboy, homebody, book nerd type of girl above the rest when it comes to my personal life, and I think Martha Plimpton is at the source of it all.
odd.
By the way, I love all three of those films. The Goonies is just all around great, Beautiful Girls is just a plain old good movie and has many actors and actresses I enjoy (including a young Natalie Portman that makes me feel dirty for loving her so much in the film), and of course Running On Empty with a cute young River Phoenix, an apparently life altering Martha Plimpton, and a fun Judd Hersch.
I hope everyone has a good holiday season, gets either a good number of presents or at least a few they really enjoy, and that everyone makes it through alive and well, (my girlfriend has now lost three people in three years during this season, a grandmother, and two friends both under twenty).
Cheers, Brian Scott.

3:16 am - Books
|
Allo, I have been reading. When I was little, I used to read often and well. Then in my later years my brain revolted and I could not read well at all (keep in mind, I have never said I write well and this journal and my others are a testament to that). Reading was a painful source of headaches, eye strain, and nervous episodes. I tried to read aloud as a kid would do but this was the time that my stutter came to me (from the same brain revolt no doubt). It was a lost cause. I quit books, magazines, and comics all together.
Nearly five years later I found something that made me want to try again. I came upon mister Kurt Vonnegut Jr. I do not remember anymore who or what introduced me to him (besides the slight mention of him in the movie Just One Of The Guys when the main character's younger brother is justifying his walls being plastered with pornographic pin ups and states that one of them reads Vonnegut in the bubble bath). I started with Slaughterhouse Five and after a month and a half, maybe two, I finally finished the book. It was not an easy triumph but his writing impressed me and I picked up another book and then another. I just kept struggling through each book until my brain was forced to quit it's revolt against the written word. My stuttering got worse both inside my head and out, but I was able to read again and I loved it.
I now am able to read quite well again and have since returned to books, comics, and magazines with little trouble. This is old news, but I don't think anyone really knew how bad some of the side effects of my brain revolt were. This was one of the worst ones for me, even though it was by far the least physical of the side effects.
Last few books read: Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess Life After God by Douglas Coupland High Fidelity by Nick Hornby The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon (and every Neil Gaiman book I could get my hands on)
Last few comic books read: Sea Of Red #2-6 Hero Camp #1-4 Grounded #1-3 Y The Last Man #11-26 Watchmen TPB
I am so grateful for winning back reading. Something so simple, but it helps so much to keep me happier than I was in those years I was without the ability.

Allo, Finally some good news. I was given a certain percent rate of permanence of my knee surgery a while back. It was a very small percent and I was told to expect a few hundred dollars from the insurance company to make things right. Well, I was woken up today by a check for two thousand dollars being waved in my face.
I need this so bad, now all the bill collectors can get off of my ass.

Allo, This entry is just to put up a few links related to good instrumental hip hop.
First up is a link to a short quicktime promo video for Blockhead's new album. His first solo release last year is pretty much considered a modern classic for the still young genre of instrumental hip hop. This new album sounds good.
The video is kind of an introduction to Blockhead, a little recap of music from the first album, a promo for the new album, and of course just part music video (pigeons stricken down with lightning flashes...you know).
http://www.ninjatune.net/qtvideos/epks/blockhead_epk.mov
Here is a six minute sample from Dj Shadow's tour release Funky Skunk. It is a real one presentation clip and takes no time to download and takes up no room on your hard drive.
http://www.hiphopsite.com/audio/real/funkyskunk.ram
Here is a link to a snippet from the dvd that comes with the rerelease of Sixtoo's "Duration". This was originally called the "Duration project" and was supposed to be a triple threat of instrumental hip hop, graphitti work, and theft. Due to funds it originally just got released as an incredible album. Now you can see it as it was intended. It is just a short quicktime sample.

Hopefully some of you out there enjoy instrumental hip hop or at least good beats and have art appreciation. Cheers.

Allo, I hate how I use this just for throwing up bad news, but that is all I ever find worth mentioning. Sorry all. I have bit my tongue on most things that have happened in the past four months though, and that is why I am on here so sparsely. I got some stuff out of the way in the last entry and now I will just try to update about mundane normal things.
Saturday Allie and I made the long trek down to Jacob's house in Salem for his housewarming/halloween party. It is a great big house that is incredible. Matt, Jenny, and Sarah had all gone before we arrived, but there were still a few faces I recognized and Allie and I both had a good time. Everyone enjoyed Allie's costume. The night ended with six of us (Jacob, Beth, Brant, Kim, Allie, and myself) in Jacob's bedroom watching John Carpenter's The Thing. It was better than I remembered it from when I was a kid. Like any other movie viewing with friends, there was an awful lot of commentary and just as many laughs. A good time had by all. I need it too.
Cheers, Brian Scott.

Allo, I have been gone working two jobs along the way leading me to the life of sleeping and working only. For a good long time my only interaction with folks was over drinks at assorted places or homes, but then I began to have horrible pains whenever I drank and I was even occasionally puking up blood. That situation left me without connections to most of my friends. It is my nature to be nervous in general, but because of work and the great drop in human interaction, my nervousness nearly doubled if not tripled. This happened before but I could counter act it with a little bit of alcohol to loosen my nerves, but with this rejection of alcohol by my body made that impossible and I was left with no aid. In high school I was able to hide in my headphones, but that does not seem to work to well now.
There are a few times that are driven by things more important than me that let me socialize and drink without problems, but they are few and far between. One such event recently though was Spud and Lyndsay's wedding. I managed to mind my nerves and I was able to drink for most of the night without problems. I did at the end of the night end up in pain, but it was worth it because it was nice to see Spud and Lyndsay dance and to play drunken darts and bowling with Drew, Jacob, and Catherine.
My great aunt died shortly after that though and now my nerves are a wreck again. I was not close to her, but my father was when he was younger and I felt for him. Also, this was my grnadmother's last living relative and so she not only lost a sister, she lost the last surviving memeber ofthe immediate family she grew up with. That really killed me. I was a pallbearer, marking my third go at this job. This is the fourth family funeral I have been to (two gradnfathers, one great aunt, and one adopted cousin).
So, if you have not seen or heard from me and possibly was angry with me or just simply wondered what has happened to me, that is pretty much what has been going and what I am fighting with currently. I usually have a more natural ease in fall, so I am hoping that this fall will be the same and that I will again be able to see people and to continue to learn from them.
Cheers, Brian Scott.

I just broke one of my toes. It indeed hurts, but it is completely bearable most of the time. It is more annoying than anything. It was sticking straight out to the side of my foot. I pushed as hard as I could to put it back where it belonged once I noticed it's odd placement. No go. The swelling had already begun and would not allow any movement. It is currently taped to my other toes and is throbbing.
I will have to miss work tomorrow. I can't really afford to miss work. If it were not for my father being able to pay from the last job I helped him on, Allison and I would be foodless and with a single packet of kool aid to share between us.
Fun stuff.

Allo.
I am still healing up from my knee surgery, but I am nearing the end of the therapy sessions. There is still a lot of pain randomly, but far less frequently now. This has been a bothersome healing process. I have made it out of the house for two semi successful friend get togethers, but they were both contained within West Bend. I have not been Milwaukee way in quite some time. I hope to change that soon if I can set up a meeting with peoples.
I saw Batman Begins and Land Of The Dead this past week. Pretty pleased with both films.
Not much to say right now, just noticed my complete lack of usage of this here journal lately.
Oh yeah, here is what I have been listening to lately:
Why? "Sanddollars, the e.p." Odd Nosdam "Burner" Lyrics Born "Same Shit Different Day" Perceptionists, The "Black Dialogue" Hanzo Steel "Kill Bill Remixes Vol. 1" Glue "Seconds Away" Stephen Malkmus "Face The Truth" Various Artists "The Found 7 inch" Decemberists "Instant Live 5/5/05 Philly, PA" Quakes, The "Last Of The Human Beings" Tommy Guerrero "A Little Bit OF Somethin'" Jagga JAzzist "What We Must"
and a thousand or so real one presentation samples from Turntable Lab.

Some things I had been doing to pass time while I was hold up in bed was watch dvds, tele shows, and read comic books. Here is some stuff I have seen or read: Kwaidan (Criterion Collection edition) DVD Felt: True Tales Of Underground Hip Hop #1 Dead Enders #1,2 My Faith In Frankie #1-4 Shaolin Cowboy #1 Brazil DVD Ginger Snaps Back DVD Sebastian O #1-3 Destiny: A Chronicles Of Death Foretold #1-3 Elf (on Starz) Around The World In 80 Days (on Starz) Books Of Magic #1 Days Of Vengeance #2 Y The Last Man TPB #1,2 5 different Vertigo preview books 2 episodes of Green Wing (on BBC America) and a whole bunch of cartoons, discovery channel, bbc america, and movies I already know and enjoy.
It is quite bothersome being stuck in bed. I see my doctor on Thursday to evaluate how well I am healing and to decide on my rehabilitation and therapy schedule. Fun. As long as I can leave the damn house.
I can't wait to be able to see people again. A few more weeks I think and things will be good.
I need to nibble some lucnh now. Cheers.

Surgery is done. Now I am sore. I am in a very bad mood.
Everyone is getting on my nerves.
I am watching Brazil on dvd. It is good. I had only seen parts before.
Jim Mahfood did a comic called Felt and it is what it sounds like, a
comic book dealing with Murs and Slug. It is odd to see them in a
comic. MF Doom got a little panel even.
Bed rest is going to be hard if I don't shake this bad mood soon.

Allo, I am waiting nervously for the human resources lady from Metavante to call me back. I am suppose to be walking through the doors in about thirty minutes for orientation, but because of everything that is going on with my leg, the insurance company, and my other job, I never had a chance to finish and return certain bits of paperwork in the required time. I called at seven and left a phone message asking her if she could call me back and let me know if this will be a problem and that I shouldn't show up today or if it will be alright and something we can handle there. No reply yet.
I still need to get in contact with a lawyer (and I have no idea where to start with that or how to check qualifications) and I am still waiting to hear back from my doctor. All this business has my head in a swirl and I am making myself sick with worry. I wish I could control this stuff a little better, but I really never have been able to. I use music the best I can to calm, but again like everything else, it has it's limitations.
On a lighter note, I just finished Blankets by Craig Thompson. I had previously read Goodbye, Chunky Rice and enjoyed it, but this was far better. It was a beautifully drawn and well told story of growing up that I think most people can feel and enjoy. I am very happy that my brother lent it to me. In recent weeks he has also lent me Bone: The Complete Volume which also turned out to much better than I had heard of witnessed through the few single issues that I had read. Good writing accompanied by good art also works as a good distraction from my mind.
Cheers.

Damn! I just got off the phone with the insurance company and now that surgery is involved they are contesting the fact that it is placed under workmans comp. I have been beeing treated for this sine Novemeber of last year and now if they decide it isn't workmans comp, I have to pay for all previous treatments (five doctors visits, four bottles of pills, four sets of x-rays, one MRI, a hospital visit, a month and a half of physical therapy), and now of course the surgery, the physical therapy after that and the crutch traning.
WTF! How am I going to be able to pay for all of this on my own. I can barely pay my goddmaned bills half the time, let alone all of this current and past medical stuff plus be out of work for three weeks to a month.
FUCK! I don't think that they should acknowledge workmans comp, okay it, and then later when it gets expensive just say no we don't think so.
